Kustaa IV Aadolf, or Gustav IV Adolf in English, was the King of Sweden from 1792 until he was deposed in 1809. Born on November 1, 1778, he ascended to the throne following the assassination of his uncle, King Gustav III. His reign is noted for his strong commitment to preserving Swedish independence during the Napoleonic Wars, which ultimately led to unfavorable outcomes for Sweden.
Gustav IV Adolf was known for his autocratic style of governance and for being somewhat isolated from his subjects. His refusal to ally with France against Britain during the wars turned out to be a disastrous decision, as Sweden lost significant territory and influence.
In 1809, after a series of military defeats and growing discontent, he was forced to abdicate in a coup. He spent the remainder of his life in exile in Switzerland and Germany. He died on February 7, 1837.
His reign is often characterized as a time of transition for Sweden, marked by political strife and eventual modernization after his departure.
